An Interview with Military 1st
Military 1st is an online retailer of outdoor, combat and tactical clothing and equipment. Since it began in 2008, Military 1st has provided a large number of bushcraft and survival tools to Preppers and Survival fans alike. The Real Survivalists were lucky enough to get the opportunity to ask some questions to Lukas from Military 1st. Here is what he had to say:
Tell us about Military 1st
Military 1st is an online retailer specializing in outdoor and combat clothing and tactical footwear, as well as camping and bushcraft equipment and accessories. Our story began over eight years ago when Michael, the founder and owner of the company, identified the potential of military and outdoor apparel and gear offered by several labels he knew. What followed was the website which currently offers products from nearly 60 brands to customers in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and the United States alike.
Which of your products or which type of product would you say are most important for survival and preparedness, particularly from a tactical point of view?
One of survival bare necessities are insulating layers, and Military 1st excels in this field as we have a massive range of outdoor and army clothing. This includes military jackets, tactical fleeces, vests and sweatshirts, base layers and combat trousers. We also stock an extensive assortment of headwear, such as Boonie hats, baseball caps etc. Moreover, we have a comprehensive collection of bags and backpacks.
The interesting thing about both those categories, military apparel and packs, is that their designs were inspired by the existing army gear or even built together with the army, tactical and outdoor professionals. So you can be sure they were thoroughly tested. A good example is Wisport, a backpacks specialist who is developing its equipment in collaboration with Polish Military forces. Also, Helikon built its range of products with the help of the best experts in the field, including Polish Special Forces, Dr Wes Doss of Khyber Interactive Associates company which does emergency response training, research and consulting Training Squad which is a firearms instruction company, and Survival Tech, an outdoor training company.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out building up their own supply of survival and tactical gear?
It’s always best to start with the basics. Here at Military 1st, we have a selection of survival essentials that we believe should be a part of every kit. We offer strong ropes, sewing kits and whistles, compasses, different First Aid Kits and a selection of water containers and water purification systems.
A big part of our assortment is lighting products, e.g. top-rated tactical flashlights and torches, headlamps and chemical light sticks. One of the most important things in survival is a shelter, and we have quite a selection of those, including tarps, tents, bivi bags and rain ponchos.
What is a top seller at the moment?
As we are approaching the cooler season, we noticed a spike in the sale of jackets and fleeces. Pentagon and Helikon fleeces are some of the most popular models.
Do you notice a change in buying patterns due to news reports? e.g. North Korea nuclear situation etc.
We didn’t notice much change which may be because our customers want to be prepared regardless of the news.
What is next for Military 1st?
As always we’re planning to increase our tactical and survival assortment. There is plenty of exciting new items already waiting in our warehouse. Moreover, our brands, like Helikon, Pentagon, Maxpedition, First Tactical and Propper, keep introducing new products, so there’s a lot to look forward to.
Furthermore, we’re currently working to improve our website to make it even more user-friendly. We’ve recently launched new pages for customers in the United States (www.military1st.com), Europe (www.military1st.eu), Ireland (www.military1st.ie) and Australia (www.military1st.com.au). We are pleased about it especially since we can offer free shipping to the U.S., Ireland and Australia.
We are also planning new promotions and special offers that our customers will be able to enjoy throughout the year.
What makes a good product for you? How do you decide whether a product is worthy of being listed on your site?
Most of the time we rely on our instinct. We are also open for suggestions. On several occasions, we’ve included products to our stock-based on customers’ recommendations.
What is your favourite survival/preparedness quote or motto?
That’d be Benjamin Franklin’s ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.’
The Real Survivalists would like to thank Military 1st for their time. They have a large amount of survival and preparedness kit available and they are well worth exploring to help add more equipment to your survival kit.
