Trust & Transparency

The Real Survivalists helps households, drivers and campers prepare for outages, storms, travel disruptions and outdoor emergencies. Our goal is to turn reliable information into calm, practical steps readers can use when building supplies, plans and routines.

How we support our guidance

For safety-critical subjects, we prioritize sources directly responsible for the guidance. These include Ready.gov and FEMA, the CDC, NOAA and the National Weather Service, the Red Cross, state and local emergency-management agencies, transportation departments and utilities. Product specifications, policies and other details that can change should come from current primary sources.

Important claims should be traceable through citations or clear attribution. We include dates and relevant conditions when advice, rules or specifications may change. We also distinguish sourced facts from estimates, research-based editorial judgment and documented firsthand experience. Firsthand claims are used only when the supporting experience has been documented.

Recommendations, context and updates

Recommendations focus on the reader’s actual task, whether that means storing water, maintaining emergency communication or preparing for an outage. We explain practical differences, limits and tradeoffs so readers can assess the reasoning instead of relying only on a label such as “best.” Safety guidance and time-sensitive facts should be checked against the relevant current authority when a page is prepared or materially updated. Read our Editorial Standards for the broader approach.
